College Night

"If you have never lived through one — never cried, laughed, and sweated through one — know this: It is the crest of the wave of college spirit; it is the peak of attainment in every activity on campus; it is the high spot that will stand out in your mind as meaning ‘college,’ when all the rest has faded."

What is
College Night?

When looking at my resume or CV, you'll notice four productions labeled as original works during my time in College. To understand me as an artist, I feel it is important to understand where these original works come from.

Each school year, my alma mater presents its home coming tradition called College Night. This tradition began over a millennium ago as a talent show to celebrate the introduction of its 4 year college curriculum. Over the last hundred years, it has become an original one act musical competition.

For College Night, each student at school chooses a Side, either Purple or Gold, and both halves will have six weeks to write, compose, and produce an entirely original hour and fifteen minute long musical.

My Involvement

Through the years, I participated in College Night as Purple Side Lighting Designer and Director, but for my Senior year I had the honor of being elected Purple Side Leader.

Serving as a College Night Leader is more than acting as a club president, it is taking on the role of Producer for the Season. In accepting this job, my Co-Leader, D'Mar Tarront-Milton, and I took on the responsibilities of creating a one act musical from the ground up in a matter of weeks.

We started by forming a Production staff. Our Purple Side Cabinet came to a grand total of 68 people holding positions that ranged from anywhere social media management, athletics coaches, to directors. Next, we hosted a script selection committee to decide what our vision for the year was and which script best matched our assets and artistic goals. After selection, we went through weeks of editing until we finalized our script. Then six weeks of auditions, scenic construction, rehearsals, and composition later, we produced the 2026 Purple Victory show Kaleidoscope

This process taught me incredibly valuable lessons about what it means, not just to be a Leader, but an artist. Collaborating with over a hundred people to produce a completely original work in such a short amount of time is an incredibly daunting task, especially when you're supposed to be the one with all the answers. Luckily, I was surrounded by a group of incredibly talented and diligent creators who were just as passionate about this project as I was. While winning our homecoming tradition was incredibly validating and invigorating, the true beauty of College Night is it gave me the opportunity to grow into myself and become a confident and capable Leader.

Kaleidoscope

"Purple Side’s “Kaleidoscope” is a celebration of originality. A mystery that doesn’t seek to solve a case of crime, but a case of the self. Those who peer into the kaleidoscope find out that what they’re looking for has always been within them." - THE ALABAMIAN, FEBRUARY 2026
